The Battle to Teach Kids Nutrition
May 28, 2008 – 10:45 amWhile taking a break for unpacking boxes, I was reading one of the local papers - the Boulder Weekly. There was an interesting article - “Health Class” The Battle to Teach Kids Nutrition. My first response to the article’s title was - it’s not the kids, the battle is the parents! Just like the old saying goes, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, put my ego into place. As I read on, the article talks about the parent’s role in teaching kids about healthy eating.
The University of North Carolina nutrition majors partnered with the second annual Kids in the Kitchen exhibit sponsored by the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties in NC. They set on hands on activities to allow the kids to touch, taste and smell foods unfamiliar to them. Believe it or not, the foods included carrots, snow pea and other common vegetables.
The best lines in the article: “For the most part, kids are really good at self-monitoring based on their appetite.” The problem? “One of the biggest obstacles we face is parents who are not willing to be the role model.” And, “If we can grab the kids in elementary school and teach them, they can actually convince their parents.” To read the full article, CLICK HERE.
This confirms the advice given to me by a wonderful healer, Dr. George Stovall. He says “if you can convince the kids, they will convince the adults and change will occur.” So, to all of you working in the field of family nutrition - go for the kids! And, the adults will follow.
